The sun was shining as I arrived at the Goodwood circuit on Saturday morning and the 100,000 daffodils which had been planted in the autumn were, by perfect timing, out in full bloom. I made straight for the Les Leston Cup camp where I found David Wylie's Speedwell GT, the Graham Robson WSM, Ian Burford's Tubby and Rae Davis' WSM being readied for practice. Above left is the very user-friendly programme and the earpiece from which I heard the commentary all weekend.

QUALIFYING & GRID POSITIONS

Qualifying
The practice laps were not without troubles for the Spridgets with Ian Burford and Rae Davis both pitting and David Wylie's Speedwell expiring in a cloud of steam while trying a quick lap. At the end, 2 TVR Granturas and an Elan were on the front row with Ian Burford 8th fastest, David Wylie 11th, Rae Davis 15th and Graham Robson bringing up the rear in 30th.

A40
There were some magnificent cars there, ranging from Bugattis and Frazer-Nashes, to Daytona Cobras, 50's and 70's saloon cars, Formula Junior, Formula 3 and 50's GP cars with demontrations from more modern GP cars and Group C sportscars. Above right are Shaun Rainford's rapid Austin Metropolitan and the equally quick A40 of Desmond Small.

Work soon commenced on changing the Wylie head gasket. Note cast alloy channel on top of Speedwell's door - attention to detail in these cars was amazing. Underbonnet shot of the Lumbertubs Sprite, right.

Burford made a good start but ran wide at Madgwick which dropped him back. Davis chased and passed an Elite but spun before continuing. Robson was dicing with a Sunbeam Alpine which he finally beat over the line. By that time the Lumbertubs was forced to pit with an oil leak, just before the finish, and unfortunately Wylie's Speedwell suffered a second head gasket failure - as he put it "back to Swift-tune with that motor!" Meanwhile, all the action was at the front with the two TVRs finally overhauled by Chris Ryan's MGB much to the pleasure of its owner, Barry Sidery-Smith. Not the most exciting of Spridget races but really great to see them out at Goodwood again. Davis was 9th, and Robson 21st (out of 23 finishers).

There is not room here to tell you about the whole weekend but overall it was superb. The Goodwood organising team had literally thought of everything and with wonderful cars, great racing and amazing camaraderie - well, what more need I say?

There are also several videos of the race on YouTube
and a Goodwood feature on the Robson WSM
